Fred Khosravi
Fred Khosravi, Confluent Surgical's Chairman, is currently President
of Access Closure Incorporated. Mr. Khosravi was Co-Founder and President
of Embolic Protection Inc. (EPI), now a division of Boston Scientific
Corporation. Both Confluent Surgical and EPI are companies spun-off
of Incept LLC, a technology incubator in which Mr. Khosravi and Dr.
Amar Sawhney are both Managing Directors. Prior to that Mr. Khosravi
founded EndoTex Interventional Systems, a Cupertino, CA based company
which is developing minimally invasive solutions for treatment of carotid
artery disease where he was the company's CEO through December 1997,
and Chairman through August 1999. Mr. Khosravi has 18 years of experience
in the medical device business and has previously held key management
positions with Focal, Inc., Guidant Corporation, and Alcon Surgical,
Inc.
Sandra Panem, Ph.D.
Sandra Panem, Ph.D. joined Cross Atlantic Partners in 2000 as a partner.
Previously, she was President of Vector Fund Management, where she
was responsible for the start-up, capital raising, and management of
the asset management affiliate of Vector Securities International.
Operations included the management of the Vector Later-Stage Equity
Fund, L.P., and Vector Later-Stage Equity Fund II, L.P., private partnerships
committing $240 million to equity investments in the emerging life
science and healthcare industries. Prior to joining Vector, Dr. Panem
served as Vice President and Portfolio Manager for the Oppenheimer
Global BioTech Fund, a $200 million mutual fund that invested in public
and private biotechnology companies. Prior to Oppenheimer, Dr. Panem
was Vice President at Salomon Brothers, Inc. where she acted as a member
of Salomon Brothers Venture Capital, a $40 million fund focused on
early and later-stage life science and technology investments. Dr.
Panem was also an Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago,
a Fellow at the Brookings Institution, and is the author of several
books and papers concerning the commercialization of new medical technologies.
Currently, she holds directorships in Martek Biosciences Corporation
(MATK), AirLogix Corporation, Acorda Pharmaceuticals Corp., Synaptic
Pharmaceuticals (SNAP), and Bioject (BJCT). She is also a Governor
of the New York Academy of Sciences. Dr. Panem received a B.S. Degree
in Biochemistry ('66) and a Ph.D. in Microbiology ('70) from the University
of Chicago.
Amar Sawhney, Ph.D. -
Co-Founder, President and CEO
Amar Sawhney, Ph.D. is one of the inventors of the hydrogel technology,
which forms the core of Confluent's technology platform. His inventions
have formed the basis for the founding of several medical device and
biotechnology companies and their products. In addition, other companies
that are pursuing technologies that have been co-invented by Dr. Sawhney
include Access Closure, Inc. (ACI), Novacell, and Azopax. Dr. Sawhney
holds over 55 patents and has authored over 100 publications and scientific
abstracts. Prior to co-founding Confluent, Dr. Sawhney was Director and
Technology Founder at Focal, Inc. (acquired by Genzyme). In addition
to Confluent, he serves on the board of MarketRx Inc. (an Incept company
specializing in sales and marketing effectiveness, planning, and analytical
products and services) as well as ACI.
Martin Sutter
Martin Sutter is a founding Managing Director of Essex Woodlands Health
Ventures, LLC, and has more than 25 years of management experience
in operations, marketing and finance in the chemical and life sciences
industries. Mr. Sutter helped to create the first formal biomedical
technology transfer venture in Texas, Cardiovascular Systems (Amnion)
in 1985, and subsequently has co-founded more than a half dozen companies
originating from institutions within The Texas Medical Center. Mr.
Sutter has lead investments and participated on the Boards of Directors
of over 30 public and private life science companies. Mr. Sutter was
previously affiliated with Mitchell Energy & Development Corporation
(MEDC) where he was involved in chemical engineering, operations and
marketing, and subsequently, was President of The Woodlands Venture
Capital Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of MEDC. He subsequently
privatized the program in 1988-1989 with the formation of The Woodlands
Venture Fund, L.P. where he was Managing General Partner. Prior to
that, he was with Peat Marwick Mitchell & Company. Trained in chemical
engineering and finance, Mr. Sutter received a Bachelor of Science
degree from LSU, an MBA from the University of Houston and is also
a CPA.
William Tidmore
William Tidmore is the past President and Chairman of Depuy Acromed.
He was also President of Depuy, the world's oldest orthopedic company,
which was acquired by Johnson and Johnson in 1999. Over 14 years at
Depuy, Mr. Tidmore held various senior management positions including
responsibilities for international businesses with direct operational
responsibilities in several countries across Europe, Latin America,
Japan, and Canada. He was instrumental in the acquisition of Acromed
by Depuy. Prior to that Mr. Tidmore was at Ethicon, Inc. a J&J
company, where he held several management responsibilities including
Vice President of Sales and Marketing in Canada. Mr. Tidmore holds
a Marketing degree from the University of Georgia.
Mark A. Wan
Mark Wan is a founding General Partner of Three Arch Partners. Prior
to co-founding Three Arch Partners, Mr. Wan was a general partner at
Brentwood Associates. During his 16 years in venture capital, Mr. Wan
has emphasized working with entrepreneurs in very early stage companies.
He has often assumed temporary operating responsibilities, managing
key functions during a company's young life. He has served on the boards
of many private and public medical companies including Biopsys Medical,
Odyssey Healthcare, and Perclose. Mr. Wan has a BS in Engineering and
a BA in Economics from Yale University. He also holds an MBA from the
Stanford Graduate School of Business.
Charles Warden
Charles Warden is a Managing Director at Versant Ventures, where he focuses
on medical device investments. Before joining Versant, he was a General
Partner with Schroder Ventures Life Sciences. Previously Mr. Warden
worked with Boston Capital Ventures where he concentrated on medical
device and healthcare investments, prior to which he was a consultant
with Monitor Company, a strategy-consulting firm. He has served on
the boards of numerous companies and is presently a director of Acufocus
Inc, CardioFocus Inc., Concentric Medical Inc., Insulet Corporation,
Liposonix Inc, and Sadra Medical Inc. Mr. Warden is also actively involved
with The Innovation Factory, a medical devices incubator. Mr. Warden
received his Bachelor’s degree from Beloit College and obtained
an MBA from Harvard Business School.
